View Full Version : A few questions
I was just looking through the site and was thinking about altars.
I have a little one builing up in my room, but does it really need all sorts of decoration and items?
I've read a lot of Scott Cunningham and Silver RavenWolf and they say to do what you want and not completely stick to what books say. Does that mean I can put whatever I want (or don't) on an altar?
And I've heard one question that beginners have to face is what Gods/Godesses they want work with (i.e. Greek or Egyptian) but what if I don't want to work with a specific sect and I just want to go with the God and Godess? Can that work?
Is there a specific "wing" of Wicca that works with the psychic dealings? I've always liked that kind of stuff, but it doesn't really fit in with traditional Wicca.

To add to those questions, I was taught you had to ask who your goddess and god are, for them to reveal themselves in your dream. I did this and found my self waking to my self stating a goddesses name. Do I use this goddess or may i chose my own?
As for an alter, cant you have a portable one? I dont have the room in my apartment to keep one up.I tried, but the cat kept jumping on it and knocking everything off.
Have i been misinformed by others?

No, your altar can be just a few items or a whole bunch. It's your altar put what you would like on it, but generally it should pertain to something that has meaning to you. You'll want it to be a useful altar that you can work comfortably with while doing rituals. Don't clutter it up so that you can't put the neccesities on it. If you want a devotional altar to your patron God/dess you can create a seperate one and place statues and candles on it.
Usually the God/dess' will reveal themselves to you. If you want to choose one, then you can meditate about them and see if they respond. However you can use the general God/dess instead of a specific name, until you find them or they find you.
As for psychic dealings, if you're interested in that then incorporate it into your life/practice. This is YOUR path, anything goes, even if you haven't found a specific category for it.

If one revealed themself to you in your dream, I would try working with them. You can choose your own, but them may not be receptive to you. So meditate on them and see what they say.
Yes! You can have a portable altar. I have 2. One stationed and one portable, I use whichever one suits me best at that time. You can leave it up or take it down when you're done. It's all up to you and what's convinient for you. ~HTH
