I know most of you have heard this term through the t.v show Charmed. I wanted to see if there was any info out there about "real life" whitelighters but all I got was sites about charmed. So, aside from what Leo does on the show, I thought some of what describes a "whitelighter" sounds like a few characteristics of various practices, incorporated into one, with an added twist that makes up this fictitious character.

Whitelighters
And Their Powers

A whitelighter is a guardian angel for witches and future whitelighters. They were originally mortals who accomplished things in their lives that made them worthy of becoming immortal with the power to help and guide others. A whitelighters job is to offer information and opinions to their charges, to protect and watch over them and first and formost, to guide them. A whitelighter can be killed by a special poison which darklighters carry round with them on their arrows, and their job is to corrupt their charges and breed with them to create more offspring and to kill whitelighters protecting their charges. A whitelighter is given cosmic powers to help them with their job however they are ment to be passifist.

These powers include:

Orbing: the ability to summon orbs round oneself to allow them to access the neutral plane and travel to another plane or place. They can also orb objects and passengers with them as long as they are in physical contact.

Regeneration: Regeneration also known as the healing touch is the ability to (in it's raw state) recreate and regenerate matter. It can be used on living beings to seal wounds or inamimate broken objects which can be repaired. Or just recreate certain matter like a half empty glass of water could be regenerated by using this ability

Telekinesis: A whitelighter has certain telekinetic powers to move simple objects and scale their power down to a molecular level to speed or slow down the rate at which molecules vibrate in order to heat or cool things
down.

Sensing: A whitelighters ability to sense their charges locations and mental states. They can sense whether thair charges are in trouble and have a limited empathic sense towards them.

Electrokinesis: A low leveled power in a whitelighter which allows them to channel energies through them and project them as electrical discharges, normally in the form of a ball.

Cloaking: The ability to cloak a charge from the magical radar and from the senses. To make them invisible to a darklighter is usually a common way to use this power.

Glamouring: The ability to cast an illusion over them to make them appear different in order to disguise them if they need to get close to, or protect a charge.

Some of these over exagerated powers sound to me like a: Shielded reiki practicing, astral projecting, telekenetic, empathetic, occult practicing witch. Jumbled into one remixed person that has aid from angels and such.

Just pondering how the creators came up with the concept of Leo's character. Any thoughts?

hmmm interesting connections. I never thought about it before, because I just assumed in was a fictional being created for the show, but then again, usually you build a character out of some truth no? Like buffy, eh...I don't know much about the history of vampires either! :o

First I want to know where you have heard of the term other than Charmed?? I have never seen it in any books that I own and trust me I have pretty much everything on mythical beings. Although I would be interested if you come across any tangible evidence of such a being. An angel for witches that is a way cool concept if you ask me. Anyways let us know if you find anythig that supports this theory.

No no, I only heard the term from Charmed, but was researching to see if there's anything "real" about them. There isn't, so I dissected the character and looked for similarities that relate to what is real i.e Shamans, Witches, etc. It's not a theory, just a thought.

Yes, there are whitelighters among us (a guardian angel for witches), we camouflage ourselves in the public, to avoid detection. Everyone expect angels to be invisible, cause they really don't know what to look for, as of prove of our exsitance. Yes, angels can materialize in human forum, which subject us to experience what any human goes threw. Have you ever experienced walking downtown, and someone would stare directly into your eyes, and when you look back into theirs, you can see the future?
We are only here to observe, and to give out spritual guidiance to other witches, to protect those during times of need, the best way we know how. When there is discovery, then the public demands so of our healing energies. Some people say that I should be a therapist, because of my use of hands, when it comes to massaging, and healing. I know that my use of healing abilities is a blessing, but I don't show it off like I'm in some kind of circus. As for the "poison arrow" thingy, ahh.. that is just made up stuff.

Since she hasn't been on here for a year, I guess I'll never get the answer to this question, but I still want to ask...

Sapphire, are you telling me that you are not a human being, and that you are an angel? Not made up from the same material as a human, yet is manifested on this plane and using a computer? :spitwater:

I was traveling by bus and had stopped at one of the stations to buy a drink. A woman there saw the crystal I wore and asked if I was a "White Lighter". When I gave her a confused look, she said what she meant was whether or not I was a "White Witch". I don't know if anyone else has ever run across that, but it was new to me. :artist:

No, can't say I've ever had that happen. Then again, I carry my crystals in a little pouch in my pocket or tied to my underwear!

That's funny. I was thinking the same thing. I was recently looking up something reguarding Extra Terrestrial information (a long story, having to do with my recently inheriting a large collection of Star Trek T.V. shows and movies), and in the comments of an article I was reading, I was very suprised to see quite a few responders claiming to be ETs of some sort, and looking down on us Earth Dwellers in such a condescending "So Much Better Than You guys" way. I found that funny. I don't know. Doesn't make much sense.

As far as the wearing your crystals? You wear them? Do most wiccans do this? What's the general reason? Protection? I wear a pentacle around my neck. But, I think it would be much cooler if I could find a charm of some sort with a beautiful dark crystal inlaid at the center.

If someone could get back to me on that subject, I'd appreciate it. : )

I've never come across anyone who thinks of themselves in that way, though I did watch something, I can't remember when or where, that some people thought of themselves as vampires and actually collected blood to drink. Said they get sick if they don't. In a way I think, the universe is so complex and unknown that we can't possibly be the only life forms out there. But there are also so many false claims and fairy tales out there too.

Yes, you can wear crystals for protection, for luck, to find love, etc. It's rather endless. Check out the crystals stones and metals section of this forum:

http://www.wiccanwisdom.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=122

There's a lot of info there about various stones, their properties, and what they are used for.

Whitelighters are basically people who follow the "Do no harm" bit, and such... But many undereducated wiccans call themselves White Witches and such, giving magic a color/good-evil representation.

Its also sometimes called WhiteLighterism.

My mum strongly enforces that line...
