I have had this debate numerous times with my ex stepfather and over the net. I, personally, am convinced that this book is just a prop(for the Lovecraftian horror series). I do believe that it can be used in ritual, as long as the one using it acknowledges(outside ritual) that they are not using an ancient spellbook written be the Mad Arab.

I want to know ya'lls views on it though.

P.S: I have never read it myself, although I REALLY want to, and have done a bit of research concerning it.

Ok, my (based on what I just learned a second ago) opinion, is that you could effectively use it in ritual. I believe anything could be, because it's all about the intent and energies you put into in anyway. It's interesting that you've been researching this. You should right a piece for the "Paths" section of the forum. That would be cool.

What does your ex step dad say?

I'll try, sometime.

He believes that there actually is/was a Necronomicon out there that pre-dates the Egyptians. But this is also the guy who believes Wicca(he's an eclectic) is itself an ancient religion.

I guess it depends on who you talk to. Wicca stems from Paganism, which is ancient.

Hai.
My mother believes the same about Wicca(that it's old), but she doesn't take enough interest in it to research otherwise.

I can’t say much about the Necronomicon on PDF. Version 1 is a load... version 2, not so much, the thought-forms that have attached themselves to that book are scary and the gateways and spells in there are very applicable, it’s a source-book for anyone brave enough or stupid enough to attempt Gateway Magic without a tutor, even though the whole story behind it is, in my opinion, also a load.
Since I was about three I’ve had past life memories, and some of them relate to a book known as the Necronomicon. These are not memories I want to remember, I can only describe them in terms of what I felt and feel: Power... ancient power, Fear, longing. But from these I can tell you one thing, whoever has the true book will not be stupid enough to try and re-print it or give it away. It’s dark beyond compare.

What is the Necromicon? I've heard the word, but never really knew much about it. It sounds to me like something related to necromancy, but I always thought necromancy was a myth as opposed to a real magickal art.

The Necronomican originated from H.P. Lovecraft's writing, in his fictitious stories. He became so influential, the Necronomicon was rumored to exist in real life, and is what he based it off of.

i have a copy of the necronomicon and a copy of the necronomicon spellbook :)

the book itself mentions H.P. Lovecraft only durring and before the introduction of the book, but that is all the times it mentions him, these introduction pages before the book starts goes up to roman numeral lvi (56 pages)

the back cover reads:
"This is the testimony of all that i have seen, and all that i have learned....For this is the book of the dead, the book of the black earth, that i have writ down at the peril of my life."

"H.P.Lovecraft himself denied the books existance, but the dreaded necronomicon has finally surfaced. written in damascus in the eighth century a.d. by the "mad arab" abdul alhazred, the accursed volume is filled with myths and rituals that have survived the darkest days of magic and occultism - long-forgotten formulae for evoking incredible things, beings, and monsters into physical appearance. editor simon overcame huge obstacles during his daring efforts to bring to light this, the most famous, the most potent, and potentially, the most dangerous black book known to the western world..."

its a good read thats for sure, its very difficult to read as all the spells and incantations in the book havent been translated but of course remain in their language, i personally would not rule out the possibility of this book being more powerfull then the holy bible being true ;)
