View Full Version : Insects (and Phobia Thereof)

All of my life I've had a very intent fear of insects. Actually, more specifically, I've always had a fear of flying insects catching themselves in my hair. It is a completely irrational phobia, but nonetheless crushes my concentration and sends me into a momentary state of panic the moment a fast, black bug passes my periferal vision. One of the reasons, I believe, that this phobia exists is that bugs, particularly of the bee, fly, and moth variety, have always been very attracted to me as others have often noted.
This irrational fear has had a negative impact on my ability to perform outdoor rituals, as my concentration is shattered the moment a loud, momentous bug comes within a foot of my head.
I thought, though, that this fear might greatly recede if I were to stop panicing and see the bugs not as mindless targeters of my knotty locks, but as having a purpose for being near me. So, what might be the reasons for bugs to have such an attraction to me, or my energy? (Besides of course I probably smell a bit after a hike up to a natural spot -.-)
Also, what are your thoughts on bugs in the matter of spiritual affairs in general?

Some bugs can be attracted to colorful clothing. I don't know offhand what colors they might not be attracted to, but you can look that up pretty easily.
It might also be where you do your rituals, as well. Different places have different bug population densities.
It could also just be bad luck.

I tend to wear black tanktops, though sometimes I do wear purple or multi-colored shirts.

Well, I do know that the color blue attracts mosquitos. Not the best color for outdoor ventures during the warm seasons.

Lol well mosquitos aren't really the problem (well, they are, but not more so for me than other people). It's mostly big, noisy, bulky bugs I'm talking about like beatles, moths, bees, and flies.

Hmmmm, I see your problem. Have...you ever....considered getting a lizard for a pet??? One bit of good news for you, though. At least moths don't have teeth! :whack:

Lol I've always wanted a lizard as a pet. I've always wanted a bearded dragon since I first saw one at an exhibit. Unfortunately I've not been able to come up with the space required to own one, and I'll be going to college in a few months, where I won't be able to keep one in my dorm.
But it's really not that I want the bugs dead. In fact, bees, and flies are very interesting and beautiful to watch from a distance, and certainly bees are vital not only to the survival of humanity but on a personal level, to the survival of my herb garden. It's just my irrational fear when they get close that's such an issue.

You could always try Skin So Soft from AVON. It is said to be a bug deflector....and it smells nice too!

ooh yes! the avon skin so soft dry-oil body spray is a very good mosquito repellant!
I'm not so sure about bees and the like, but it certainly works fantastically on midges. :)

I wasn't so sure if it would work for bees or not, but I figured it wouldn't hurt to try! Besides, I use it, and I have yet to be attacked by a swarm of angry flies!

haha, nice one.
I read recently that feverfew tea, left to cool then applied to the skin acts as an all natural insect repellent, although I'm sure it's probably just to do with the strong perfume of it.

Bees are attracted to an increase in heart rate, so if you start freaking out, that probably doesn't help matters! I know what you mean though, wasps have taken over my patio and I hate them! Bumble bees I don't mind as much... Mosquito's like sweet blood too, my husband is always getting attacked lol!

Lol wasps I don't mind as much, even though they're less kind than bumble bees, they are slow, and calm. In reality I like bumble bees a lot more but in the blink of a moment they scare me more.

I actually have a summer past time I started a few years ago of raising butterflies~! They are such wonderful delicate creatures. I get the painted ladies. They come in a container and when they crystallize, you put them in their house and watch them grow! I release mine at some point. I like to stick my hand in and feel them walk on me or give me kisses. I think they tend to recognize their mummy, since I'm all they've known, and they can't bite! I love doing it! They are actually the first insect I've owned, and I've thought about others, but I'm not sure at this point.. but I will definitely keep up with the ladies!
