Cleansing Jewelry?

I've heard that you should cleanse jewelry before you wear it such as pentacles, talismans and so on. In this case I want to purify my pentacle. However, there's not much information on the web about how you go about doing it. Also, should you wear your pentacle in public or basically anything non-magical? I've heard that if you do it will absorb a lot of negative energy and lose it's magical power.
I don't really know where to start, so ideas are greatly appreciated.

I'm sure that a lot of people have different ideas about this and following is my opinion.

I do prefer to cleanse 'magical' or crystal jewellery and usually do it by one of the following:

1) Smudging with incense
2) holding it under running water and visualizing the water clearing it
3) soaking it in seawater for a while (rinse well afterwards)
4) burying it in the earth for a day or two
5) using reiki energy to cleanse it
6) hold it in my hands and visualize it being cleansed by light/energy/colour

(If using water on crystal jewellery, make sure the crystal can be put in water)

With regard to it being worn hidden or not - my opinion is that you need to do what feels 'right' to you, cause everyone is different. I hide my pentacle, but simply because it can cause me problems if I wear it in the open where I live. Any other 'magical' jewellery, I wear openly.

I do a simliar cleansing on my jewerly so won't add anything to that.

On the to hide or not in public. I wear mine in plain sight. I wear it for protect against negative energy and it works. I cleanse it on the full moon every 2-3 months depending on when I notice the negative vibes getting to me. I worked it a negative place for a while (things are settling) and without my pentacle think I would have gone mad. But it is a personal choice on what to do so do what is right for you.

On the initial cleansing for my jewelry I laid it under the new moon to pull all energies from it, completely clear the crystals and metal ... then nightly would place it out under the waxing moon until the full moon filled it with her positive building energy...

Yes, the process takes the full 2 weeks, and yes, I also burned incense, on the full moon I cast my circle, called the dragons, pulled down the moon, and dedicated the jewelry to the positive and healing energies of my Craft and placed them in the service of the Triple Goddess.
I wear 2 stones (amethyst and boodstone), a pentacle, and a dragon w/hematite. I never leave the house without them. I recharge them often under the full moon and find that the jewelry often protects me from negative energies...often without me even taking note of it ...

And yes, I wear them all openly.
